E E 774 - Mobile Communications I

Introduction to mobile communication system design and analysis. Focus is on the physical layer. General mobile system design principles for both terrestrial and satellite mobile systems. Representations for stochastic bandpass signals and systems. The mobile communication channel will be studied in depth, including both large-scale path loss and multipath fading. Effective modulation schemes for digital mobile communications will be studied, including their power spectra, and performance in AWGN and flat fading channels. Statistical characterization of interference will also be covered. Examples of current and future mobile communication systems will be presented.
