HIST 3140 - Pop/High Culture in 20th Century America Examines the history of popular and high culture, as well as their intersection, during the 20th- century, with special emphasis on the post-war years (1945 onwards). Moves chronologically and focus on works that include painting (from realism to popism), music (the rise of jazz and rock n’ roll), literature (both popular and highbrow), humor (including standup), and movies. Cultural developments will be studied in their historical context and related to politics and society.
