ML 2400 - Language Immersion through Community-Based Service Learning during Study Abroad

This course pairs students studying abroad in Merida, Mexico with a partner organization (a community group, governmental agency, or NGO) where they will use their Spanish language skills in real-life contexts while they contribute to the goals of the local community. Through regular participation in a local organization over the course of the semester, they will get to know the people, customs, and history of Merida, and develop a nuanced familiarity with key aspects of Mexican and Yucatan culture. In class, students will read and discuss current research on Mexican, and particularly Yucatan, society and history. They will apply their new knowledge both in practice with the partner organizations and in writing assignments and exams.
