LJC 4945 - Externship in Law, Justice & Culture


The Externship in Law, Justice & Culture provides undergraduate students opportunities to learn real-world skills through summer placements with law and justice partner institutions in the United States and abroad. Externships provide experiential learning opportunities in legal offices, judicial chambers, federal agencies, human rights organizations, international justice NGOs , and other justice settings in order to facilitate the transition from student to practitioner, instill professionalism, and increase awareness of law and justice concepts.

Requisites: CAS 2500 and selection through an application process sponsored by the Center for Law, Justice and Culture
Credit Hours: 1 - 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be repeated for a maximum of 3.0 hours.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 10.0 seminar
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will articulate an awareness of ethical challenges associated with law-related work and practice
  • Students will demonstrate analytical, writing, and presentation skills appropriate to law-related professional settings
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge and skill through law-related work and practice
  • Students will demonstrate understanding of how social analysis might be effectively applied to real-world situations and problems relating to law and justice
  • Students will reflect on issues of power and privilege, race and ethnicity, gender, economics, and family and community, in relation to self and to others, with applicability to legal advocacy and practice
