OCOM 7944 - Elective - Preclinical Research Series Original Research


The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an opportunity to develop and enhance their knowledge and skills at the level of a beginning to intermediate researcher. The student, under the guidance of their research mentor, designs and execute an original research project as part of their preclinical medical training.

Original research is designed specifically to allow a flexible approach for students to obtain first-hand experience on the design, development, and/or completion of activities that span a range of research topics, including but not limited to: basic science, clinical science, human subjects/patient based research, epidemiology, and health systems science.

Credit Hours: 1-4

Course Outcomes

  • Students will be able to effectively review literature.
  • Students will be able to define research/project objectives.
  • Students will be able to state a research hypothesis.
  • Students will be able to delineate the components of a research protocol.
  • Students will be able to explain the importance of required training and approvals, determine when needed, and describe the processes involved (e.g., CITI Human subject’s protection training, IRB, IACUC, etc.) for ensuring compliance measures are in place
  • Students will be able to describe the process involved in proper and legal collection of data or information.
  • Students will be able to explain the importance of budget development and identification of funding sources.
  • Students will be able to describe the process of disseminating research findings.
  • Students will be able to justify the significance of the study and its contribution to evidence-based research, clinical significance, and scholarly effort more generally.
  • Students will be able to design/implement an effective literature review pertinent to the topic under investigation.
  • Students will be able to formulate a research question.
  • Students will be able to collect and analyze data; interpret results in the context of the topic under investigation.
  • Students will be able to apply knowledge from research experience to critically analyze current basic, social-behavioral, clinical, and/or translational research practices.
  • Students will be able to develop a summary paper, conference poster, case-series report, and/or draft manuscript related to the topic under investigation.
