The Diversity Studies Certificate is an interdisciplinary certificate program that is available to any undergraduate student in the University to complement and enhance a student’s general education, academic major and/or career preparation. We live in a world that is becoming more and more complex at the same time it is becoming “smaller and smaller” as we have more access to others whose identities and cultures are different than our own personal background and identities. Given the unique historical circumstances of the United States, it is critical that well-rounded educated individuals understand the historical, political, sociological and legal contexts within the United States and their impact on our contemporary issues in diversity.

Undergraduate students who earn the Diversity Studies Certificate will:

  • Prepare to be culturally informed, competent and respectful towards all diverse peoples,
  • Prepare for living and working in a diverse local and global society,
  • Enhance their academic baccalaureate degree both personally and professionally, and
  • Develop as participatory and empowered citizens in the democratic communities of their community, state, nation and world.

While we know that there are many types of diversity, the Diversity Studies Certificate chooses to focus on five of the most recognized domains in the United States. In learning about these different types of diversity there is a cross-fertilization of ideas that can be applied to the understanding of diversity issues in general. All of these categories are interactive and intersect with others due to the complexity of human beings and relations, yet we understand the importance of “unpacking” or deconstructing each individually:

  1. Race/Ethnicity
  2. Social Class
  3. Gender
  4. Sexual Orientation
  5. Disability

To receive the Diversity Studies Certificate, students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours, to include two required courses, as well as five courses from the list of approved diversity courses. Of these five courses, only one course may be taken from the student’s major department. The distribution of the courses follows:
