Program Overview

The Occupational Hygiene and Safety major at Ohio University prepares students to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control workplace environmental factors that may affect the health, safety, security, comfort, and productivity of the worker. The program also introduces students to policy issues critical to worker health and safety in the US. With new technologies emerging every day, the hygiene and safety professional’s job function remains critical to the health and well being of workers, their employers, the community, and the environment.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Career opportunities in occupational hygiene, and the now inseparable field of safety, are diverse and many. Graduates of the program work in industry, defense, insurance, and government. Some find employment in health care settings, including hospitals, laboratories, or universities. Still more opportunities exist in the areas of transportation, utilities, resource management, consulting, and hazardous materials and waste. Ohio University graduates typically begin their OHS careers as technical specialists at one of a diverse group of employers. Historically, the profession has allowed graduates to advance to managerial positions, and ultimately on to senior administrative duties (subject to individual skills, motivation and capabilities). With many Baby Boomers now retiring, entry-level job prospects for OHS majors are expected to remain strong through at least 2020.
