Program Overview

This program is primarily designed for students who have completed an allied health course of study and have been certified to practice in their fields. The program integrates the students’ technical skills with general academic skills necessary to advance in their chosen career areas. Up to 24 credit hours may be awarded for current certification in an allied health field.

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Student who receive this degree will be better positioned for advancement at their current position. Students may want to seek this degree as a preliminary course of study for later entry into the health care field, but this degree does not in itself qualify any student for a specific job in the health care field.
 

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the health technology major, students will:

  • Acquire a basic knowledge in health and health sciences in relation to their specific areas and disciplines.
  • Learn to respect and embrace diversity in the classroom and the workplace.
  • Demonstrate computer competency and the ability to use tools and technologies in their respective areas.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and will use methods that are appropriate to the content area, including oral, written, and graphic.
  • Present information on careers in the field of health technology.
  • Be able to distinguish how different health care professionals are integrated into the entire health care delivery system.
  • Be able to explain the professional responsibilities for a myriad of health professionals and requirements for certification/licensure/registration of them.
  • Develop and exhibit attitudes and behaviors appropriate for their respective professions.
  • Develop a comprehensive resume of their practical and education experiences.
  • Be able to discuss law and ethics in health professions as relevant to those in health technology careers.
  • Have a basic understanding of medical law, legal system, malpractice, negligence, and standards of care for an array of health professions.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the availability, distribution, career path, educational requirements, and practice patterns of various types of health professionals.
  • Explore job opportunities in health technology in the classroom and through experiential learning.

Requirements

Technical Associate Degree Requirements


The minimum requirement for the Associate in Applied Business (A.A.B.) or the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the completion of 60 credits with a 2.0 accumulative GPA in both the major area of study and all course work attempted at Ohio University. A maximum of 15 credits earned through the experiential learning may be applied to any technical associate degree. You must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours while enrolled at Ohio University, and you must earn a minimum of 50 percent of coursework taken to fulfill your major concentration in residence with resident credit as defined in the Graduation Requirements – Universitywide  section. You also must meet Ohio University General Education requirements for associate degrees. (See Graduation Requirements - Universitywide section)

To earn a technical associate’s degree, you must complete an Application for Update of Program(s), available from any college office or regional campus student services office.
