Program Overview

The medical assisting technology (MAT) program prepares competent entry-level medical assistants in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The curriculum covers administrative and clinical tasks found in ambulatory health care. Upon graduation, a student may sit for the CMA (AAMA) examination and/or continue with one of several 2 + 2 bachelor degree options. The Medical Assisting Technology (MAT) Associate in Applied Science degree program at Ohio University–Lancaster is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (http://www.caahep.org/) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB).  Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, 25400 US Highway 19 North, Suite 158, Clearwater, FL 33763, 727.210.2350. Admissions Information

Freshman/First-Year Admission

Students must complete a program application and a series of prerequisites prior to December 1 before enrolling in MAT 1700 and MAT 2010. These prerequisites include a completed health form with doctor certification that they are sufficiently healthy to perform clinical and practicum duties; up-to-date immunization for Hepatitis B; a signed Technical Standards statement on file; and any course prerequisites. Many clinical sites require that students must pass a background check (FBI and BCI), have up-to-date immunizations for MMR, Varicella, TB (within the last 10 years),  have a current-year PPD test, and documentation of negative drug screens prior to students being at the sites. Students at these sites will be required to have a background check (FBI and BCI), up-to-date immunizations for MMR, Varicella, TB (within the last 10 years), current-year PPD test, and drug screen performed at their expense any time that it is required. All documents must be submitted to the MAT program director.

Change of Program Policy

External Transfer Admission

Opportunities Upon Graduation

Upon graduation, graduates may sit for the CMA (AAMA) exam. Medical assistants perform a wide variety of clinical and administrative tasks in ambulatory health care settings, such as physician offices or urgent care clinics. Students may also pursue bachelor’s degrees in health administration, health communication, technical studies, or specialized studies.

Upon completion of the medical assisting technology major, students will be prepared to:

Requirements

Technical Associate Degree Requirements


The minimum requirement for the Associate in Applied Business (A.A.B.) or the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree is the completion of 60 credits with a 2.0 accumulative GPA in both the major area of study and all course work attempted at Ohio University. A maximum of 15 credits earned through the experiential learning may be applied to any technical associate degree. You must earn a minimum of 18 semester credit hours while enrolled at Ohio University, and you must earn a minimum of 50 percent of coursework taken to fulfill your major concentration in residence with resident credit as defined in the Graduation Requirements – Universitywide  section. You also must meet Ohio University General Education requirements for associate degrees. (See Graduation Requirements - Universitywide section)

To earn a technical associate’s degree, you must complete an Application for Update of Program(s), available from any college office or regional campus student services office.

Major Hours Requirement


The medical assisting technology major requires a minimum of 63 hours.
