The Honors Tutorial program in Dance Studies (B.A.) offers an individualized, liberal-arts based course of study for self-disciplined and highly motivated dance students. It balances breadth and rigor with freedom for independent academic and creative achievement. The Director of HTC Dance Studies functions as the curriculum advisor and coordinator of tutorials for the duration of the students time in the program, designing an individualized curriculum with breadth of experience, depth in selected areas, and challenge for superior achievement as the goals. Examples of emphasis might be: dance history/theory, dance writing/criticism, dance pedagogy, kinesiology and somatic study, dance ethnography, or movement analysis. It is a four-year program in which students take a tutorial course each semester along with foreign language, supporting courses in related areas of study, and a full range of dance studies courses, from technique and composition to dance history.
Students are selected by the Director of HTC Dance Studies and the Honors Tutorial College on the basis of superior ability and sustained motivation. A high school rank in the upper 10%, high scores on standardized tests (30 composite ACT or combined score of 1300 on SAT), writing samples, two letters of recommendation, and a personal interview with the Director of HTC Dance Studies are recommended. In addition to application and admission to the Honors Tutorial College, students must apply for and audition for admission to the Dance Division of the School of Dance, Film, and Theater. The application deadline is December 1st, and admission interviews and audition are held in January.
