  • MUS 1690X - Wind Band Abroad


    This course is for the enrichment of our band students in the Marching 110 and Wind Symphony and to expose the uniqueness of American bands to France. Both ensembles are open to all student at Ohio University via audition. The course will begin with a history of the musical arts within France and the historical Franco-American connection. It will also introduce students to some conversational basics of the French language as well as French culture. Students will additionally learn about travel safety and risk mitigation in France. During the second half of the semester, students will learn and rehearse the musical repertoire to be performed in Paris and Normandy. The capstone of the course is the trip to France in May, 2016. Performances will take place in Paris and Normandy.

    A study of the life and work of German Romantic opera composer Richard Wagner with special focus on his magnum opus: Der Ring des Nibelungen. The course will include class lectures, discussions, audio/visual presentations, etc. The course will culminate with a week-long trip to Washington, DC to see the Washington National Opera company’s production of The Ring and attendance at a variety of lectures being presented in conjunction with the production. The trip would occur immediately after the end of our spring semester. The trip to DC for the performances is a required component of the class.

  • MUS 4620 - Music in the Multicultural United States


    This course is intended to give students an overview of the two contributing cultures and their musics found in this country, from the songs of rural Appalachia and New England to the African music brought by the slaves; to the musics that grew out of those traditions, from the popular musics of the cities to the songs of Latin Americans and European minorities. We will trace the way these musics live in the modern city, in the academic world and in contemporary music society. (Nettl, 1976) The student will be introduced to the study of music as a manifestation of human need and a representation of culture. The course uses music as an index to understand American culture while it introduces the student to various concepts in the field of ethnomusicology. (Nettl, 1976)
