PA 5555 - Care of the Critically Ill and Hospitalized Patient for Physician Assistants Provides the physician assistant student with knowledge of the comprehensive medical care of high acuity patients in the hospital, critical care, and hospice setting.
Requisites: PA 5410 Credit Hours: 2 Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken. Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,PR,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Student will be able to distinguish between critical and noncritical presentations of acute and chronic medical conditions of hospitalized patients.
- Student will be able to apply established criteria to determine which hospitalized patients require admission to the critical care unit.
- Student will be able to create evidence-based treatment plans that include diagnostic testing, nutrition and pharmacologic management for patients who require hospitalization and/or critical care.
- Student will be able to utilize evidence-based resources and technology available in the hospital and critical care setting.
- Student will be able to appraise the need for and appropriate timing of palliative care and hospice in the treatment of critically ill patients.
- Student will be able to create appropriate patient-centered management plans for palliative care and hospice patients that include end-of-life discussions and management of pain.
- Student will be able to discuss various aspects of cultural beliefs and perceptions regarding critical illness and end-of-life care.
