ENG 1776Z - Reading the American Republic- American Civic Literacy Students examine key documents of the American civic tradition in the context of American literary and cultural texts. While developing skills in literary and rhetorical reading, students enlarge their understanding of the values and responsibilities of United States citizenship and how writers have responded its complexity.
Credit Hours: 3 General Education Code (students who entered prior to Fall 2021-22): 2HL Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to employ appropriate literary terminology to discuss texts related to American civic literacy and its legacy.
- Students will be able to use appropriate evidence in analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating civic documents and literary texts relating to core American values.
- Students will be able to explain the relationship between texts about core American values and the historical period in which they were produced.
- Students will be able to critically state, describe, and consider issues of American values as they are depicted in literary and historical texts.
- Students will be able to systematically and methodically analyze and evaluate the assumptions of authors, texts, or characters in texts about core American values.
- Students will be able to formulate a clear thesis that draws conclusions about the relationship between literary texts and the United States’ foundational commitment to civil society.
