HIST 122A - The First Universities: History & Learning in Europe, 1100-1600 History of the first universities and their role in medieval European history. Close examination of Bologna, Paris and Oxford. Focus on three main topics: the exchange of knowledge across languages and cultures; the role of education in growing and sustaining strong government; and controversy arising from the convergence of religion, politics, and scholarship. We consider relevance of these topics to the modern university and its place in society
Prerequisites: NOT HIST 122 Credit Hours: 4 General Education Code: 2HL Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
