HIST 426 - Dictatorship in Latin American History


Focuses on predominant type of political/governmental system in Latin America: authoritarian dictatorship. Examines major examples of 20th-century ideological authoritarianism in Latin America ranging from populist authoritarianism of Juan Peron in Argentina to bureaucratic authoritarian regimes recently in power in the Southern Cone and Brazil. Attention devoted to competing schools of interpretation that attempt to explain recurring phenomenon of nondemocratic forms of government in Latin America.

Prerequisites: HIST 323C
Credit Hours: 4
