HIST 1221 - The First Universities: History & Learning in Europe, 1100-1600 History of the first universities and their role in medieval European history. Close examination of Bologna, Paris and Oxford. Focus on three main topics: the exchange of knowledge across languages and cultures; the role of education in growing and sustaining strong government; and controversy arising from the convergence of religion, politics, and scholarship. We consider relevance of these topics to the modern university and its place in society.
