HIST 3718 - History of Central Europe Introduces the the major developments in Central Europe from the 16th- through 20th- centuries; the formation of the Hapsburg Empire, the impact of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation in Central Europe, the Hapsburg struggles for supremacy in Germany and Europe from the 17th- through 19th- centuries, and their failed efforts to maintain a multinational empire in an age of nationalist extremism. Will conclude by examining the post-Hapsburg history of the Central European states of Austria, Czech and Slovak lands, and Hungary from 1919-1989.
