HIST 3320 - History of Women in the Middle East Main themes, divided chronologically and thematically, include the history of veiling, polygamy, divorce, and laws of personal status during the early periods of Islam; a re-examination of “harem politics” and the role of women in the Ottoman Empire; the effects of westernization and modernization in the 19th-century societies; and recent trends such as the enforcement of the veil in the Islamic Republic of Iran and Egyptian fundamentalist movements; section on women poets and novelists.
