OPIE D102 - Foundations in Reading and Writing This course is one component of full-time study of English as a second language for students at the beginning level whose ultimate aim is academic study. Four hours of classroom instruction are designed to provide students with instruction and practice in reading, vocabulary development, and sentence-level writing. If necessary, students will be introduced to the conventions of English language writing, including the alphabet, spelling, capitalization, and sentence-level punctuation. Students build their reading skills by learning reading strategies and practicing with readings and exercises from the textbook. Students build their vocabulary by learning new words and learning to determine the meaning of words from context clues and word analysis. Students work to develop sentence-level writing skills.
