ML 2400 - Language Immersion through Community-Based Service Learning during Study Abroad

This course pairs students studying abroad in Merida, Mexico with a partner organization (a community group, governmental agency, or NGO) where they will use their Spanish language skills in real-life contexts while they contribute to the goals of the local community. Through regular participation in a local organization over the course of the semester, they will get to know the people, customs, and history of Merida, and develop a nuanced familiarity with key aspects of Mexican and Yucatan culture. In class, students will read and discuss current research on Mexican, and particularly Yucatan, society and history.
