ISE 5140 - Introduction to Operations Research


Introduction to basic methods of operations research, modeling methods, linear programming, simplex method, transportation and assignment models, and integer programming.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply basic branch-and-bound method on small problems.
  • Apply the Simplex method.
  • Describe heuristic search methods.
  • Develop assignment models.
  • Distinguish between linear and nonlinear relations in various problems.
  • Distinguish between real and integer decision variables.
  • Explain what a mathematical model is and what kinds of problems can be modeled in this way.
  • Formulate a mathematical programming problem with objective function, constraints and decision variables.
  • Formulate transportation models and apply transportation simplex.
  • Graphical solution of a two decision variable model.
  • Use Microsoft Excel solver or equivalent software to obtain optimal solutions.
