IHS 5240 - Overview of Healthcare Advocacy This course provides an overview of healthcare advocacy, which includes assistance in: understanding diagnoses, prognoses, and outcomes;
financing medical care; seeking medical care that meets accepted standards, informed choices (ethical issues); culturally relevant healthcare; sufficient preventative care; and links to health-related programs and services in the community, including mental health/substance abuse services.

- Describe the tasks, skills and actions of a healthcare advocacy framework.
- Explain how advocacy protects and empowers consumers.
- Explain how to provide assistance with diagnoses, prognoses, and outcomes.
- Explain what is meant by culturally relevant healthcare.
- Identify health related programs and services in communities.
- Provides examples of preventative care.
