EDCS 3010 - Education and Cultural Diversity


Public schools are the life-blood of a democracy. One measure of their success is how well they educate all children, regardless of race, class, ethnicity, gender, disability, sexual orientation, family configuration, language and religion. Observes, analyzes and reflects on classroom instruction and learning in a culturally diverse environment and society. Explores the cultural, social, and historical dimensions of education as they relate to a diversity. Examines the cultural and historical context of domination and exploitation in the U.S.; the self as an anti-bias educator, and the curriculum and pedagogy in an anti-bias classroom. Utilizes discussion drawn from lectures, readings, film, and the stories of students and classroom educators. Field service learning component as part of course assignments so that students have an opportunity to engage in multicultural education and interact with diverse peoples.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Able to utilize various pedagogical strategies with diverse students in order to respond to the complexity teaching and learning in a diverse classroom.
  • Exhibit how the themes of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, language, cultural values, identity, family and community, and political economy impact classroom instruction within the broader context of culture.
  • To become an anti-bias and culturally competent educator with the responsibility for creating culturally relevant classrooms.
  • To demonstrate the knowledge of some of the historical and personal experiences of diverse others with whom we may not share an ethnic/cultural background.
  • To explore one’s own beliefs and assumptions as they relate to diversity.
  • To know and to follow the codes of ethical conduct and to act with integrity, respect, and fairness toward all classroom constituents and their families.
