RFM 1600 - Color Theory for Visual Merchandising


This course focuses on the characteristics, relationships, and theories of color based on major color systems. Course emphasis is placed on applications of color for visual merchandising and product development in the fashion industry.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 1.0 lecture, 4.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:  

  • Students will be able to develop visual ideas in both hand exercises and digital media.
  • Students will be able to recognize and appreciate basic quality production in craftsmanship regarding art skills.
  • Students will be able to critically analyze color in the context of historical, cultural, and commercial applications.
  • Students will be able to describe different theoretical systems of color organization pertaining to visual merchandising.
  • Students will be able to use and identify basic design principles as related to color.
  • Students will be able to articulate design language concerning aspects of color appropriately.
  • Students will be able to develop their drawing proficiency skills in the practice of drawing, cutting, painting, and assemblage in the production of quality-crafted products.
