RFM 4910 - Internship: Retail Merchandising and Fashion Product Development


This internship course is taken at the same time that on-the-job experience in the fashion industry is being completed. This course includes cooperation with fashion industry, retail merchandising and fashion product development establishments through communication among the student, the instructor and the workplace supervisor. Students complete assignments specific to the responsibilities they have on the job in order to gain experience and knowledge of the fashion industry.

Requisites: (RFPD 2890, 3230 and 3300) and (Jr or Sr)
Credit Hours: 12
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 24.0 internship
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,PR,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:  

  • Students will be able to advocate for the retail merchandising and fashion product development profession, and to promote themselves through self-advocacy.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in communication skills.
  • Students will be able to examine their role in a professional experience in a community where clients and colleagues represent diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of supervision and evaluation of employees and their ability to work effectively with people.
  • Students will be able to investigate how to effectively establish and maintain client and customer relationship, acting as an agent of a business or organization.
  • Students will be able to explain how theoretical information is applied to the actual work environment and to demonstrate familiarity with the industry structures of retail merchandising and fashion product development companies.
  • Students will be able to formulate professional work oriented routines and responsibilities.
  • Students will be able to examine the roles of professionals in the retail merchandising and fashion product development industry as a life-long learner.
