IHS 4246 - Identifying Abuse in a Healthcare Setting


This course addresses various forms of abuse including physical, verbal, sexual, drug, and workplace harassment in healthcare settings. Course material will focus on the identification of the various forms of abuse, ways to prevent abuse, and the ethical and legal ways of reporting the abuse.

Requisites: Jr or Sr
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will demonstrate ability to discuss abusive situations with healthcare patients in a professional and productive manner
  • Students will demonstrate ability to participate in group discussions on the subject matter in a productive manner.
  • Students will demonstrate the ability to problem solve and critically think about responses to possible encounters with an individual or family experiencing abuse
  • Students will explain how to report different types of abuse even in challenging circumstances
  • Students will identify possible signs of abuse: Physical, verbal, sexual, drug/alcohol dependency
  • Students will identify ways to prevent abuse
