RFM 2100 - Evolution of Clothing and Fashion Trends


This course covers notable influences that impact the evolution of clothing and textiles throughout the ages with a focus on historical fashion in Western societies and how it ties into the trends occurring in apparel items in mass market production today. The course provides an understanding of why having in-depth knowledge of historical fashion trends is crucial to the success of fashion in its future.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:  

  • Students will be able to compare and contrast the construction techniques and influences of well-known fashion designers on clothing and textile design within the historical context of the period.
  • Students will be able to articulate terminology and vocabulary related to the fashion cycle throughout various geographic regions and generations.
  • Students will be able to determine how traditional clothing and textile items influence the meaning and organization of contemporary fashion.
  • Students will be able to identify the importance of trend forecasting services in the evolution of fashion trends in the 21st Century.
  • Students will be able to evaluate examples of historic clothing items housed in collections, such as the Mary C. Doxsee Historic Clothing and Textiles Collection, for identification of the evoluation of clothing and textile design in product development.
  • Students will be able to identify designers, along with iconic designs, and their everlasting influence on the changing role of fashion today.
  • Students will be able to evaluate how events in history continue to shape the ever-changing fashion industry.
