EDCE 6550 - Counseling Theory and Techniques Will address counseling and psychotherapeutic theories. Included will be outcome research associated with various counseling interventions. Attention will be given to the personal characteristics of the client and counselor, and how those characteristics impact the therapeutic process. Also included will be studies of basic interviewing, assessment and counseling skills related to the various theories addressed. Consideration will be given to factors that influence the helping process including age, gender, and ethnic differences, and ethical practices of the counselor. This will be accomplished in a manner that encourages the student to engage in critical thinking and analysis of the counseling theories reviewed. The class will focus on practice rather than lecture. Counseling is an applied activity, and for it to be learned, a student is first encouraged to experience its fundamental elements.
