EDEC 6640 - Advanced Child Development Major issues in child development examined in light of current research and theoretical formulations. Cognitive and social-emotional development, the role of early experience, language acquisition, the origin and importance of play, moral development, and media influences examined from several theoretical points of view, including learning theory, social cognitive theory, Piagetian and Vygotskian constructivism, ecological systems theory, and psychoanalysis.

Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,PR,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will apply their knowledge of child development and theories of child development by developing a topic paper that is suitable for publication.
- Students will apply their understanding of child development and developmental theory to their work with children and families.
- Students will articulate the importance of understanding child development and developmental theory when working with children.
- Students will discuss the benefits and limitations of different developmental theories.
- Students will evaluate examples of current research on child development and apply their results to their understanding of the various theories.
- Students will identify aspects of modern society that effect children’s development cognitive and social-emotional development.
