OCOM 8225 - Elective - Proctology
This course offers opportunities for the 3rd and 4th year student to attain knowledge and skill in one or more areas of special interest related to his/her development as a future osteopathic family physician. A limited number of rotations may be scheduled in one-week blocks (EKG reading, nuclear medicine, radiology, anesthesiology, laboratory medicine, podiatry, house nights, substance abuse, pain management, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, palliative care, pharmacy, ophthalmology, wound care, introduction to research); the remainder may be scheduled in 2 or more week blocks with the understanding that only a total of 12 weeks of elective rotations may be spent in any specialty except primary care (including family practice, general internal medicine and pediatrics), excluding the time spent in assigned rotations.
Credit Hours: 4-24
Course Outcomes
- During elective rotations, students are expected to develop their competencies in many basic clinical skills.
- In lieu of an examination and in addition to the preceptor’s evaluation, the student is expected to compose a two-page reflective paper describing progress toward the written objectives.
- Students are expected to write at least 10 objectives for each elective rotation in consultation with the faculty preceptor. These objectives will serve as a baseline for assessment of the student’s knowledge, skills and professional behavior.
