COMS 4110 - Communicating with People with Disabilities Examines the implications of communication between the physically disabled and able-bodied individuals/groups. The course utilizes simulated exercises, video presentations, field trips, and outside guest lecturers to give the student reasonable exposure to the disabled community.
Requisites: Jr or Sr Credit Hours: 3 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - The main objective of this course is for each of us to critically examine how able-bodied individuals in an able-bodied culture communicate with people with physical disabilities.
- Identifying the negative communication patterns typically employed by able-bodied persons when communicating with a person with a disability.
- Identifying appropriate communication skills when interacting with people who have visual, auditory, or mobility disabilities.
- Creating greater awareness of the physical and attitudinal barriers faced by people with disabilities.
- Reducing the uncertainty about interacting with people who have physical disabilities.
