LING 4750 - Language Learning
This course provides an introduction to some of the major theories, hypotheses, principles, and areas of empirical inquiry traditionally and currently being investigated in the field of second language acquisition (SLA) research. This course also provides a background regarding first language acquisition, but the primary focus is on second language acquisition. The course aims to develop student awareness of how SLA theories apply to second language learning situations and teaching practices.
Requisites: LING 3500 or concurrent
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to use the major theories and research related to the structure and acquisition of language to help English language learners develop their second language proficiency
- Students will be able to apply their knowledge of phonology, morphology, syntax, pragmatics and semantics of English to identify and explain second language errors.
- Students will be able to apply their knowledge of common transfer errors from learner L1(first language) to identify and explain second language errors
- Students will be able to use major concepts, principles, theories, and research related to the nature and role of culture and cultural groups to construct supportive learning environments for English language learners
- Students will be able to use a variety of standards-based language proficiency instruments to show language growth and to inform their instruction
- Students will be able to use a variety of assessment instruments for the identification, placement, and reclassification of English language learners
- Students will be able to use techniques of language data elicitation and analysis.
