  • Successful students will be able to apply Kirchhoff’s circuit laws to single and two loop circuits in the solution of problems.
  • Successful students will be able to reliably record data in laboratory notebooks and be able to present data in graphical and tabular form, appropriately annotated with labels, legend, titles, units, etc.
  • Successful students will be able to solve problems involving Coulomb’s and Gauss’s laws of electrostatics, they will also understand how to determine the electric force, and electric field due to a continuous charge distribution.
  • Successful students will be able to solve problems involving properties of electrically charged particles, and the properties of insulators and conductors.
  • Successful students will be able to solve problems involving the addition of waves including the interference of waves; the beating of waves; and the properties of standing waves.
  • Successful students will be able to solve problems involving the transient response of resistors, capacitors, and inductors.
  • Successful students will be able to solve problems involving electric potential, electric capacitors, and the energy stored in an electric field.
  • Successful students will be able to solve problems involving magnetism and magnetic fields; electromagnetic induction, and electromagnetic waves.
  • Successful students will be able to solve problems involving the reflection and refraction of light waves, geometric optics, interference, and diffraction light.
  • Successful students will be able to use calculus in their solutions to problems, where appropriate.
  • Successful students will demonstrate an understanding of the methods of solving problems. They will provide all the steps necessary for their solutions and they will cite the relevant physical principles.
  • Successful students will demonstrate an understanding of wave motion including the properties of traveling waves, harmonic waves; transverse and longitudinal waves, including sound waves, and reflection and refraction of waves.
  • Successful students will have written a technical report, including drafts, on one laboratory experiment.
  • Successful students will learn how scientific hypothesis and theories are established and tested, and the historical context of their development.
