PHYS 4051 - Modern Physics

Designed to review and summarize the theoretical ideas of modern physics, and to examine applications to atomic spectra, nuclear and particle physics, quantum fluids and solid state physics. This is expected to be a capstone course in modern physics, so students are expected to have a solid grounding in quantum mechanics and contemporary physics.

Requisites: PHYS 3001 and 4021 and 4031 and Sr only
Credit Hours: 3
OHIO BRICKS Capstone: Capstone or Culminating Experience
General Education Code (students who entered prior to Fall 2021-22): 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • applications of quantum mechanics to crystal lattices, including band theory and free-electron model
  • calculate atomic physics phenomena such as Zeeman Effect and spin-orbit interactions
  • know the properties of semiconductors, superconductivity and magnetic materials
  • understand the physical basis for quantum phenomena in nature
