PT 2590 - Introduction to Physical Therapy Designed for those students who are considering physical therapy as a career option. Presentations and topics of discussion will provide the student with an understanding of the physical therapy profession and the requirements for entry into the profession.
Credit Hours: 2 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Compare entry-level education with advanced professional education on the basis of the accreditation process, length of study, admission criteria, availability, and access.
- Compare physical therapy publications on the following bases: weekly/monthly/bi-weekly, APTA/non-APTA, and content.
- Compare the areas of specialization presented in class on the basis of setting, therapists¿ responsibilities, types of evaluations performed and treatment rendered interactions with co-workers and others, length of stay, patient conditions and age.
- Define terminology used in the physical therapy presentations.
- Describe the physical therapy profession including the definition of physical therapy, purpose, career positions, licensure and practice laws and professional responsibilities.
- Describe the responsibilities of the physical therapist in addition to direct patient care such as documentation, management, supervision, education, community service, ethical and legal.
- Identify career opportunities in each of the physical therapy specialty areas and identify career opportunities in related healthcare fields.
- Identify factors to consider when applying to a physical therapy educational program.
- Identify selected events in the history of the physical therapy profession and describe their significance.
- Relate areas of specialization to his/her interests in physical therapy.
