PSY 3250 - Psychology of Health and Illness Theory and research on the psychological aspects of physical health and illness; interrelationships of behavior, emotion, stress, lifestyle, and illness; psychological factors in disorders such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, headache, asthma, and immune disorders; applications and effectiveness of psychological interventions.
Requisites: 9 Hours in PSY including 101D or 1010 Credit Hours: 3 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to explain the major theories of health behavior change and the ways they have been applied by health psychologists.
- Students will be able to criticize major health psychology research findings in the areas of stress, pain, coping, psychoneuroimmunology, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and substance abuse.
- Students will be able to describe the health challenges facing contemporary society in both developed and developing nations.
- Students will be able to describe the major research methods used by health psychologists.
- Students will be able to discuss the role of health psychologists in research and applied settings.
- Students will be able to explain the biopsychosocial model of health and disease.
