DSI 2922 - Practicum II


Students placed in a variety of real-world settings. Required to actively participate in the interpreting process in collaboration with working professional interpreters while applying concepts gleaned from their classroom experiences. Students adhere to the tenets of the NAD-RID Professional Code of Conduct. Each student observed and evaluated by practicum supervisor periodically throughout the semester. In addition, students maintain a log of their observations which is discussed in the seminar portion of the course.

Credit Hours: 2
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 14.0 practicum

Learning Outcomes:
  • Complete at least 200 hours of supervised field experiences in a variety of settings.
  • Demonstrate appropriate communication with all individuals involved with the practicum including site interpreter(s), site supervisor(s), course instructor and/or all other relevant individuals.
  • Demonstrate awareness of RID Code of Ethics by adhering to it in various settings.
  • Demonstrate interpreting ability in school and/or community based settings.
  • Describe short and long term goals for a Professional Development Plan.
  • Express the role and responsibilities of an interpreter in various settings (i.e. education, community, medical).
  • Identify and accommodate the use of assistive technology in various settings.
  • Identify the client’s preferred communication modality and demonstrate effective interpreting or transliterating.
  • Identify various demands of the setting and utilize appropriate controls.
  • Illustrate professional growth through discussions and a reflection journal.
  • Illustrate the awareness of personal performance to identify strengths and weaknesses to make necessary improvements.
