EDTE 5230 - Reading/Language: Laboratory


This course extends students’ knowledge and skills related to helping children become successful readers and writers. Students perform diagnostic examinations, prepare lesson plans, and individually tutor a struggling reader. Through their work, students monitor the progress of their struggling reader, identifying instructional objectives based on diagnostic examinations and implementing specific strategies to remediate difficulties. The work in this course culminates in the creation of a final remediation report, including documentation and comparisons of assessment results as well as a full description of several activities used to meet each instructional objective. For this class, students are required to work with a student in grades K-3 or 4-6 for a total of 35 hours.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to select literacy assessments that are appropriate for students based on their anticipated needs.
  • Students will be able to administer formal and informal literacy assessments.
  • Students will be able to and interpret the results of formal and informal literacy assessments to determine a struggling readers’ strengths. and areas of continued need
  • Students will be able to use assessment data to plan small group and individualized instruction.
  • Students will be able to monitor students’ progress during instruction and adapt their instruction based on students’ evolving needs.
