GEOL 5580 - Fluvial Sedimentology Provides students with an understanding of how to interpret the depositional environment of sedimentary rocks deposited by rivers and the large and small-scale forces that control the formation and preservation of these deposits.
Requisites: Credit Hours: 4 Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken. Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 2.0 laboratory Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Graduate students are expected to actively participate in discussions both in the class and on field trips.
- Graduate students must write paper worth 20% of the total grade on a topic appropriate to the class based on original literature and make a presentation to the class on the results of their paper.
- Students will extend their knowledge of the physics of sediment transport.
- Students will have a detailed understanding of the major river types in both modern and ancient setting based on reading original literature.
- Students will have an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the terminology and principles during the field trips.
- Students will prepare a term paper on some aspect of fluvial sedimentology based on original literature.
