CARS 2010 - Greek Archaeology


This course provides an introduction to Greek society and culture through investigation of its material culture and the archaeological contexts in which they are found. It explores the history of Greek archaeology and different approaches to investigating particular kinds of material evidence. The course examines the growth and collapse of complex civilization in Bronze Age Greece, the reemergence and growth of city-states from the Early Iron Age, and the development and spread of Hellenic cultural institutions to the Near East and Italy.

  • Students will be able to identify and put in context the terminology, sites and types of artifacts characteristic of the main periods of Greek culture.
  • Students will be able to interpret scholarly archaeological writing relevant to the different periods and regions of study.
  • Students will be able to apply their knowledge about Greek archaeology to new or unfamiliar objects and sites.
  • Students will be able to evaluate critically archaeological theories about the development of different cultural institutions in Greek society.
  • Students will be able to identify aspects of Greek material culture which have been adopted by other ancient and modern cultures.
  • Students will be able to analyze how Greek material culture has been adapted to support cultural agendas of ancient and modern cultures.
