MGT 3000 - Principles of Operations Not open to Freshman or Sophomore Students. Examines how operations management provides a product or service with higher quality and at a lower cost than competition. Emphasis is on providing a conceptual understanding of the operations function, which includes: product/process design, facility location and layout, capacity planning, material and inventory management.
Requisites: Not COB major except BS 5511 and WARNING: No credit for this course if taken after MGT 3200 Credit Hours: 3 Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to answer the question “What is the role of operations management in the firm?”
- Students will be able to describe the variety of issues involved in operations management.
- Students will be able to identify which problem-solving approaches may be helpful in operations management.
- Students will be able to describe how and why Operations coordinates with other functions.
- Students will be able to define quality management and describe the use of basic quality tools.
- Students will be able to explain the difference between service and manufacturing operations.
- Students will be able to explain basic principles of manufacturing strategy, facility design and layout, and production planning and control.
- Students will be able to identify the impact of bottlenecks, sequence dependence, and variance on operations.
