- The successful student analyzes, interprets and evaluates cultural references and issues of the target culture(s) from discipline-appropriate perspectives, both in class discussions and in writing.
- The successful student recognizes cultural references (such as landmarks, works of art and literature, historical events and figures, traditions and customs) and social issues (such as gender, race, and religion).
- The successful student understands the complexity of messages transmitted by these references, or in the context of these issues, and appreciates that cultural statements and images may be inherently multi-layered in meaning.
