Geological aspects of ancient lake environments. Topics in lake models, geochemistry, sedimentology, and stratigraphy are selected from current literature for presentations and discussions.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Learn how lake sedimentation responds to climate, tectonics, watershed characteristics, and basin shape.
  • Learn how to read and critically analyze scientific papers.
  • Learn how to write summaries and concepts through analyzing scientific papers.
  • Learn the different tectonic situations that produce lake basins and how this affects sedimentation patterns in the resultant lakes.
  • Understand that scientific conclusions must be backed by good evidence.
