GEOL 5830 - Field Hydrology


Introduction to collection, analysis, and interpretation of hydrological field data.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Aquifer test, monitoring well installation, slug testing, soil, water and vapor sampling, surveying, measuring gradients, pump and slug tests, AquiferTest or other aquifer testing programs.
  • Contaminant treatment systems.
  • Flow and chemistry of natural waters, measurements of precipitation, evapotranspiration, infiltration, runoff, streamflow, oxygen sag in rivers below wastewater plants, lake chemistry, groundwater chemistry, PHREEQCI or other geochemistry pro.
  • Geographic Information Systems (GIS) -Introduction to ArcView.
  • Geophysics, seismic data analysis, with program FIRSTPIX© and analysis of resistivity and conductivity data with Program RESIX©.
  • Graduate students are expected to demonstrate superior levels of comprehension and synthesis relative to the undergraduates.
  • Graduate students will submit one additional class assignment that is designed only for graduate students.
  • Tropical wetland assessment (flow, GPS, heads, chemical loads).
  • Unsaturated zone hydrology, soil gas sampling and analyses, soil venting (tests of unsaturated zone), data analysis with HYPERVENTILATE or other programs, and modeling with CESOIL or other programs.
