GEOL 5860 - Applied Seismology


Field methods and analysis techniques for seismic characterization of shallow subsurface, multichannel digital data acquisition, generalized reciprocal refraction, and common offset refraction techniques as practiced in environmental and geotechnical industries.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Graduate students are expected to include a summary of a literature search on the technique(s) described in each report, for 15% of the course grade. These summaries may include recent field case studies or developments in processing methods.
  • Graduate students are expected to perform at a higher level than their undergraduate counterparts. They are expected to have a more sophisticated grasp of current debates regarding the course topics.
  • Become familiar with the primary seismic processing packages used in industry.
  • Gain experience in planning and executing multi-array seismic refraction surveys.
  • Gain experience planning and executing seismic reflection surveys.
  • Gain experience planning and executing surface-wave seismic surveys.
  • Know how to assemble a professional-level seismic project report including a statement of objectives, descriptions of sites and the methods employed, presentation of data, interpretation and conclusions and an estimated (fictional) cost of project.
  • Know how to merge seismic refraction data from multiple arrays using phantoming techniques.
  • Know the basic steps of analyzing common-depth-point reflection data, including filtering, static corrections, velocity analysis and stacking.
  • Understand how to determine the optimum offset value for a common-offset reflection survey.
  • Understand the data processing flow for analyzing refraction data using generalized reciprocal methods.
  • Understand the data processing flow for analyzing surface-wave data using the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Wave technique (MASW).
  • Understand the process by which a common-offset seismic image is produced.
