ITS 5330 - IT Compliance and Planning


Students examine various federal, state, and international IT compliance requirements and management strategies to meet those requirements. Alternative IT compliance frameworks are considered. Students also examine the IT planning cycle and evaluate the appropriate role of compliance in the strategic IT planning process.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to explain IT components of specific compliance requirements, such as HIPAA, FERPA, Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI-DSS, state security breach reporting, etc.
  • Students will be able to explain various compliance frameworks, such as COBIT, ISO 27000, NIST, etc.
  • Students will be able to identify and critique the controls in an IT compliance plan.
  • Students will be able to analyze business risks, conduct risk assessments, and develop compliance plans.
  • Students will be able to design controls to counter information security threats and vulnerabilities to reduce risk.
  • Students will be able to develop a general profile for a real-world company or organization that lets them speculate on the risks faced by that company’s operations.
