LING 6610 - Second Language Listening and Speaking An introduction to the current theoretical understanding of the nature of second language listening and speaking and the evidence-based principles underlying the development of effective and engaging pedagogical materials for the teaching of second language listening and speaking in ESL/EFL settings.
Requisites: LING 5800 Credit Hours: 4 Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken. Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to apply phonological knowledge to help improve learners’ listening comprehension.
- Students will be able to assess second language learners’ listening abilities.
- Students will be able to create suitable age, proficiency, and needs appropriate tasks and activities for L2 listening.
- Students will be able to implement a meta-cognitive approach to teaching second language listening.
- Students will be able to use their knowledge of the learners’ L1 to identify student pronunciation challenges and provide effective remedial practice activities.
- Students will be able to design and implement authentic communication gap speaking tasks that allow for the negotiation of meaning.
- Students will be able to enumerate the different gestural and paralinguistic features that accompany speech and incorporate them into their direct teaching of second language speaking.
- Students will be able to create role play materials which highlight the importance of social roles and relationships of power, distance, and familiarity in appropriate language choices.
- Students will be able to assess second language learners’ speaking abilities in professional and academic contexts.
