LING 6710 - Grammar in Use This course allows students to develop their own understanding of English grammar as well as explore and practice techniques to help non-native English speakers (NNESs) develop their own grammar. This includes the form, meaning, and use of several of the major grammatical structures NNESs commonly study as well as best practices within teaching. Students of this class gain experience with explaining, teaching, coaching, and assessing various grammatical structures in addition to gaining insight into current theories in L2 grammar instruction. The role of World Englishes in grammar education and communicative competence is explored as well.
Requisites: Linguistics Major only Credit Hours: 4 Repeat/Retake Information: May not be retaken. Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I Learning Outcomes: - Students will be able to apply current theory and practice in L2 grammar instruction to their teaching.
- Students will be able to analyze the learning of grammar from a learner’s point of view, particularly classroom learning.
- Students will be able to recognize errors and give appropriate feedback to learners.
- Students will be able to use various instruments to assess second language learners’ grammar proficiency.
- Students will be able to teach grammar within the framework of World Englishes.
