SOC 6800 - Sociology Proseminar


The first-year proseminar introduces graduate students to sociology as an intellectual endeavor and profession, and helps students acclimate to the rigorous requirements and culture of graduate school. Students discuss and coordinate their graduation plan, including gaining insight into how to construct a project committee and exploring the culminating experience options (thesis, applied project, or comprehensive examinations) for the MA in Sociology. Students also learn about campus resources that can contribute to their academic success and personal and professional development, meet department faculty and learn about their research and teaching interests, meet and interact with other graduate students, learn how to construct and update resumes and CVs, and learn about career and professional opportunities, including non-profits, corporations, government, law school, or further Ph.D. study.

Requisites: Graduate student in Sociology
Credit Hours: 1
Repeat/Retake Information: May be repeated for a maximum of 2.0 hours.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 1.0 seminar
