SOC 6020 - Graduate Seminar in the Sociology of Organizations


A survey of the sociological approach to the structure and function of organizations in society. The primary focus is on bureaucracies, nonprofit organizations, and enterprises. Students will gain an appreciation of how organizations work, empower, frustrate, and shape people. Students will understand why organizations succeed or fail in achieving their goals.

Requisites: Graduate Standing
Credit Hours: 4

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to apply relevant sociological concepts to organizational issues.
  • Students will gain skills to critically evaluate the role of organizations in social and public policy debates.
  • Students will understand the major sociological theories of organizational structure, behavior, and change.
  • Students will understand the use of social scientific methods for conducting organizational research .
